Knights Edge Sparta 3-2 with Walk-Off Win

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Morris Hills softball team knew that a win on Thursday afternoon would set up a thrilling group final on Saturday against their crosstown rivals, Morris Knolls. But first, they had to get past a tough Sparta squad—one that had already made waves by knocking off top-seeded Ramapo in an earlier round.

Zoe Turner took the circle for the Scarlet Knights, while Gabi Heim pitched for the Spartans. Both entered with ERAs under 2.00, promising a high-stakes pitchers’ duel—and they delivered.

Morris Hills struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. With runners on the corners and two outs following a walk and an error, Theresa Brown delivered an RBI single to right field, giving the Scarlet Knights a quick 1-0 lead.

Sparta answered in the top of the third. A leadoff single and an error put runners on second and third with no outs. Alexia Hill grounded into a fielder’s choice to tie the game, and Alexis Arpino followed with a double off the wall to put Sparta ahead 2-1. The inning ended dramatically when Holly Lagitch made a spectacular catch on a soft liner from Heim and doubled up the runner at first base.

From there, both pitchers settled into a rhythm, dominating through the sixth inning. Combined, Turner and Heim allowed just two hits over that stretch, keeping the tension high.

In the top of the seventh, Alexa Berry led off with a single for Sparta, but Turner quickly retired the next two batters, giving Morris Hills one last chance. Freshman Holly Lagitch—who had previously delivered a walk-off single against Montville—stepped to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third. On the final pitch she saw, Lagitch lined a single to right field, plating two runs and giving Morris Hills a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The win sets up an electrifying Group Three championship showdown on Saturday against Route 46 rival Morris Knolls. The victor will advance and claim a full year’s worth of local bragging rights.

Standout Performers

Zoe Turner: Turner tossed a complete game, surrendering just one earned run while striking out eight Sparta batters. Her performance was essential to keeping Morris Hills in contention and securing the win.

Holly Lagitch: The freshman has emerged as Morris Hills’ most clutch hitter in pressure situations. Over the last two state tournament games, Lagitch has recorded three singles, two walks, and three RBIs—all of those hits coming in the seventh inning with the game on the line.

The Next Chapter of the Rivalry

Morris Knolls has dominated recent meetings with Morris Hills, winning five straight matchups—including a decisive 13-1 victory back in April. Given her recent form, Zoe Turner figures to give everything she has in the championship contest. She’ll face a tough opponent in Morris Knolls pitcher Leah Kleczkowski, who carries a 1.93 ERA. In their previous five-inning meeting, Kleczkowski allowed just one run and struck out five to earn the win.

With both teams eager to prove their supremacy and punch a ticket to the next round, Saturday’s matchup promises to be a fierce and thrilling battle. The return of the Morris Hills–Morris Knolls rivalry on the softball diamond is sure to deliver high drama.
